As Ramadan approaches, I started to think about ways to engage my children in this wonderful month. For those of you who may not know, Ramadan is a holy month for Muslims around the world, in which they fast during day time hours and engage in extra worship. While coming up with this basket I wanted to:
Make this month special for my kids, and
Ensure that they were engaged in something fun & beneficial
This way, I could have some time to reflect and pray without the guilt of having bored children. A kids Ramadan basket serves as both an exciting gift to mark the commencement of the month, as well as a little chest of activities to be worked on as the month progresses. Read on to see what I included in my kids’ Ramadan basket!
*Note: This basket was curated for ages ranging from 4-8 years old.
Crafts & Activities
Prayer Mat Coloring Page
My daughter loves coloring, so this was a natural selection for me! I love that it features a prayer mat, and I plan on talking to her about the importance of prayer before and after her coloring session. If your child can write, it would be a nice idea to have them write some words associated with prayer around the margins (such as: “focus”, “5 times daily”, etc). They could then hang this up as a poster for reference. This prayer mat coloring page is available for download here.
Ramadan Math Package
I’m so excited that my daughter is finally old enough to use my free Ramadan math package. I plan on doing one activity per week with her. Throughout the week, I’ll try to emphasize the mathematical concepts for her in other ways, to help cement some of the themes. The math package is available for download here.
Curriculum Practice
Not everything in our basket is Islamically themed. I wanted to also include some curriculum practice for my daughter, that she could complete independently. This scholastic sticker set was a great fit for that reason. You can find it here.
Crafts
I also included some good ol’ fashioned dollar store crafting supplies. This will give her the option of making Ramadan and/or Eid cards for her friends and family.
Books
Ramadan & Fasting Activity Book
When I saw this adorable Ramadan and Fasting Activity Book I knew I had to get it. It’s filled with awesome activities to keep your kids engaged throughout the month.
Golden Domes and Silver Lanterns
Golden Domes and Silver Lanterns is a wonderfully designed book. It highlights the beauty of the Islamic culture in a way that makes kids feel proud. It would make a great Ramadan classroom gift. You can find the book here.
Ramadan Joy
My daughter loves the Ilyas and Duck series, so this book was an obvious choice to include in our basket. It’s the latest installment in the series of books about these lovable characters. You can pre-order the book here.
Bonus: Our Ramadan Calendar
This year I decided to make my daughter’s Ramadan calendar. Once I found the boxes (pictured below) at Michaels, the rest just flowed, with some inspo from pinterest of course. I plan on hanging this little calendar on our wall along with our other Ramadan decor. I’ll fill the little boxes with good deed tasks, reminders and treats for her. If you’re part of my mailing list, you would have received the labels I used as a free download (a preview is available below).
